Shutdown rundown: PHA ‘open for business’ while SNAP benefits come early

PEORIA — The government shutdown is forcing a number of federal agencies to take special measures in order to continue operations.

Jackie Newman, executive director of the Peoria Housing Authority, said so far the effects of the shutdown have been minimized in Peoria. “We are open for business in the middle of a storm,” she said.

“The Department of Housing and Urban Development has formed a contingency plan through January and February. HUD has also allowed for access to their housing assistance payment reserves in case the shutdown continues into March,” said Newman.
